Glasgow City Council estimated to save £161,419 by implementing the Shared Cost AVC retirement benefit.

As an employer of Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) members, your employees are entitled to the valuable retirement benefit of a salary sacrifice Shared Cost Additional Voluntary Contribution (Shared Cost AVC) scheme.  

Shared Cost AVCs enable your LGPS members to access a cost-effective way to create additional income for retirement, thanks to savings on Income Tax and National Insurance contributions (NICs) on whatever they pay into the scheme.

However, as any contributions your employees make into the scheme are taken from gross salary (‘salary sacrifice’) – your organisation can make an extra saving of 14.3% per contribution due to a reduction in employer NICs.

Based on an estimated LGPS workforce of 18,889 members, this means Glasgow City Council could see savings of £161,419 in the first year of launching a Shared Cost AVC scheme (based on an average employee contribution
amount of £250).
